The Yamuna River has crossed the danger mark in Delhi after the heavy rains in northern states forcing the government to evacuate over 2000 families living along the river banks.
The danger mark for the Yamuna River stands at 204.83 metres in the city, while the river is flowing at 207.12 metres on Wednesday. The vehicular traffic has been badly hit due to flood water in Kashmiri Gate and Monastery. Authorities have evacuated thousands of people living in the areas in east Delhi like Usmanpur, Yamuna Bazar, Bhajanpura and Shastri Park and set up relief camps for their shelter.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that situation has been under control and there was no need to panic as her administration is ready face the Nature’s fury.
The railway bridge will remain closed till the water level recedes to the safe level of 204 metres. The Old Yamuna Bridge connecting East Delhi was shut yesterday after the water level rose to 204.83 metres. Even though, the city has not witnessed heavy rains so far, the water level in Yamuna has been rising due to the release of 8.06 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathinikund barrage in Haryana on Monday, and an additional 3.38 cusecs on Tuesday morning.
The state government has deployed 62 boats for rescue operations. The disaster control room has been monitoring the situation in the national capital since the rain played havoc in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
