Fire breaks out on Tamil Nadu Express, 47 Killed

TNI Bureau: A major fire broke out in New Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, leaving over 32 people dead and 25 injured. The BBC claimed the death toll at 47.

The incident occurred at around 4:30 AM when one of the bogies of the Tamil Nadu Express caught fire. The train was immediately stopped and fire brigade was called in.

Although the fire was doused, it was too late and many people were charred to death. The cause of the fire is not yet known. A short circuit could be behind this.

The bogie, which caught fire, was identified as S-11, which had around 72 passengers. Rescue operation is going on in full swing. A special relief train has been dispatched from Chennai to Nellore.

The Indian Railway has announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia relief to the kins of the dead.
