TNI Bureau: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) on Monday instituted a case concerning alleged police excesses and violations of tribal rights in Odisha’s Sijimali region, following a petition filed by BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra.
The petition was formally accepted by NCST Chairperson Antar Singh Arya at his office in New Delhi earlier in the day. The complaint highlights serious concerns over alleged atrocities against tribal communities in Sijimali, as well as violations of key legislations such as the Forest Rights Act, 2006 and the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA).
According to the petition, the issues stem from activities linked to a proposed bauxite mining project and associated infrastructure development, including road construction, in the region. It alleges that due processes, including consent of Gram Sabhas and recognition of forest rights, may have been bypassed.
Taking cognisance of the matter, the Commission has assured prompt action. This includes instituting a formal case, issuing notices to concerned authorities, and seeking detailed responses. Sources indicated that an NCST fact-finding team may soon visit Sijimali to assess the situation on the ground.
As the petitioner, Dr. Patra will be kept informed of all developments, and the matter is expected to be personally heard by the Chairperson. The Commission’s intervention is seen as a significant step toward addressing concerns over constitutional safeguards and protection of Scheduled Tribe communities in the region.
The development comes amid growing scrutiny over the implementation of tribal rights laws in resource-rich areas facing industrial expansion.
