New Delhi: The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will be scrutinized by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), chaired by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. This committee will review two crucial bills related to simultaneous elections in India.

    • 10 members will be announced later in a separate communication.

Key Details:

  • Chairperson: Shri P.P. Chaudhary, former law minister, is expected to chair the committee, though Anurag Thakur is also considered a possible candidate. The final decision will be made by Speaker Om Birla.
  • BJP Representation: 14 out of the 21 Lok Sabha members are from the BJP-led NDA, with 10 BJP MPs on the panel.
  • Significance of the Committee: The JPC will focus on reviewing the proposed changes to the Constitution and laws to implement simultaneous elections in India, an idea that has been under discussion for a long time.
