Vedanta had already given a three-month notice to the state government regarding the closure of its refinery due to non-availability of bauxite. Since Odisha government did not give any assurance on providing bauxite to Vedanta, the company decided to close the refinery as per the schedule.

According to Vedanta, they have been running the plant at lower capacities and incurring heavy losses. The company had invested Rs 50,000 crore in Lanjigarh refinery alongwith an aluminium smelter of 1.5 mtpa and a captive power plant.
