Tamil Nadu Gas Leak: Another Young Odia Woman Dies; Toll Rises to 10

TNI Bureau: The death toll in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has risen to 10 after another young Odia woman, Deepanjali Juang of Talaraidiha village in Kendujhar district, died while undergoing treatment. Earlier in the day, Rita Juang from Telkoi block of Kendujhar also succumbed to her injuries.

Most of the victims belonged to the Juang tribal community of Kendujhar district and had migrated to Tamil Nadu for work. The ammonia leak occurred on June 21 at St Peter & Paul Seafoods Exports Private Limited near Periyapalayam. The deceased include workers from Telkoi, Banspal and Harichandanpur areas of Keonjhar district.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, 67 of the 83 affected workers are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Of them, 16 are on ventilator support, 21 are receiving oxygen assistance and 30 are in stable condition. Most of the injured workers are from Odisha, while others belong to Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal.
