TNI Bureau: The tenure of Subodh Kumar Singh, former Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), has resurfaced in public discourse following recent critiques from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the management of national entrance examinations. Singh was reassigned from his leadership role at the NTA in June 2024 amidst widespread public outcry stemming from alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam and the cancellation of the UGC-NET.
These events precipitated nationwide demonstrations, accusations of exam paper leaks, Supreme Court intervention, and significant criticism from students, parents, and opposition parties. Numerous candidates voiced concerns that administrative shortcomings and a lack of transparency had undermined the integrity of India’s examination framework.
However, the recent focus has shifted to Singh’s subsequent professional placement. Rather than exiting the administrative sphere, the senior official was placed on compulsory wait before being appointed as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser within the Union Ministry of Steel.
Critics have characterized this as a “reward posting,” occurring despite the substantial concerns raised during his leadership at the NTA. Singh was subsequently returned to his parent cadre in Chhattisgarh, where he currently holds the position of Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. It shows how he was rewarded by the BJP despite his dubious track records, alleges Rahul.
Rahul Gandhi has seized upon this matter to engage with younger voters, alleging that the government is shielding officials while students endure the consequences of exam leaks, cancellations, and ongoing uncertainty. The Congress party asserts that this situation highlights a pervasive lack of accountability within institutions tasked with safeguarding the future of India’s youth. In response, the BJP has defended the government’s actions, emphasizing that reforms are being implemented to enhance examination security and rebuild confidence in the system.
