Odisha Govt Begins Safety Audit of Seafood Units

TNI Bureau: Alarmed by the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu that claimed 7 lives and left 67 workers ill, the Odisha government has ordered a safety audit of seafood factories using ammonia.

The Directorate of Factories and Boilers has directed field officers to conduct spot inspections of such units in teams of at least two officers. They have been asked to assess existing safety measures, identify additional safeguards and submit reports within a week.

Officials have also been instructed to identify other factories using ammonia gas and report the details for further action.

At least 5 Odia Workers among the deceased in ammonia gas leak incident at a seafood processing factory, located in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district, in Tamil Nadu.
