TNI Bureau: The reported decision to allow ISKCON to participate in the distribution of free food during the upcoming Ratha Jatra has triggered a fresh debate over the protection of Jagannatha culture and Odia identity.

Critics argue that the move contradicts the Odisha government’s stated commitment to preserving the sanctity and traditions of the festival.

The controversy stems from ISKCON’s long-standing practice of observing Snana Jatra and Ratha Jatra on dates that differ from the traditional calendar followed at the Shree Jagannatha Temple. This issue has repeatedly drawn objections from the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, temple authorities and scholars of Jagannatha culture. The Gajapati Maharaja has recently urged the President and the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.

If reports that ISKCON has been permitted by JSW to assist in food distribution are accurate, the government should clearly explain the rationale behind its decision. Transparency is essential to prevent misunderstandings and maintain public confidence.

During Ratha Jatra 2025, ISKCON had distributed free food on behalf of Adani Group.

While service to devotees is welcome, preserving the authenticity, traditions and cultural heritage associated with Mahaprabhu Jagannatha must remain paramount. The government should address the concerns of devotees and ensure that administrative decisions do not create avoidable controversies during Odisha’s most revered festival.
