People in Bhubaneswar had a tough time yesterday because of the record-breaking heatwave. This is the highest-ever temperature in the capital in the last seven years. The city had earlier recorded 46.3 degrees Celsius on June 12, 2005.  At least one person reportedly died of sun stroke, while 10 others were hospitalised.

The sudden surge in mercury level has been attributed to the north-westerly wind. The situation will persist for another few days. There may be no respite from the heat till June 9.

Several other cities in Odisha too recorded high temperature on Monday. Baripada and Talcher too recorded 46 degrees Celsius temperature. At least 18 towns in Odisha had recorded 44 degrees and above temperature yesterday.

They include Balasore (44.4), Chandbali (44.7), Cuttack (43.0), Bhawanipatna (45.5), Hirakud (45.2), Sundargarh (45), Sonepur (45), Balangir (45), Sambalpur (44.8), Angul (44.5) and Jharsuguda (44.5).
