The research is being carried out by the Department of Biotechnology of Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada, with support from the Odisha government’s Science and Technology Department and guidance from the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow.

So far, 148 species of lichen have been identified in Similipal. Among them are Physcia melanocroma, reported for the first time in India, and Cladonia proticza, recorded for the first time in Odisha. Collected samples have been preserved in the university’s biotechnology laboratory, and their chemical properties are currently under analysis.

Lichen is a unique organism formed through a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. It grows on rocks, tree bark, soil and hills, producing protective chemical substances that are biologically active and medicinal in nature.

Research scholars Shubham Pradhan and Bijayananda Sahu said Similipal’s rich biodiversity offers immense opportunities for new discoveries. Department head Prof. Biswajit Rath added that the goal is to utilise the medicinal potential of lichen for the benefit of society.
