Angul, August 8, 2013: India’s leading steel maker, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd, today commissioned the largest Steel Melting Shop (SMS) and its Allied unit of the 6.0 MTPA integrated steel plant at Angul, Odisha, on the Birth Anniversary of its Founder Shri OP Jindal. With commissioning of the Steel Melting Shop in its Angul project, JSPL has completed the 2.5 MTPA capacity out of the 6 MTPA in the first phase of its greenfield project at Angul.
“The Electric Arc Furnace of the SMS is of 250 Ton capacity and is the largest in size in India and second in Asia. Commissioning of this SMS is an important milestone for our project. With this landmark achievement, we have achieved the 2.5 MTPA steel production capacity in the first phase,” said Mr. Dinesh Kumar Saraogi, Executive Director (Projects) of JSPL, Angul Unit.
Last year, the company had commissioned India’s widest 5.0 Meter Wide Plate mill as part of the integrated steel project.
The steel melting shop is of 2.5 Million Tons per Year capacity and has the highest flexibility for raw materials, as it can use both Solid Hot feed, Solid Cold Feed and Hot Metal feed. The Hot DRI produced from the DRI plant will be directly fed into the Electric Arc Furnace at 550oC and it can maximize the use of Hot DRI to reduce power consumption.
It is equipped with latest features like Break-out Prediction System (BOPS), Electromagnetic Mould level control (VUHZ), Stopper control through electro servo actuator (VEMA). The technology for SMS has been proved by SMS- Siemag.
“Our Angul Plant is of 2.5 MT capacity now and we shall commission our balance 3.5 million Tonne by the end of 2015. We shall certainly fulfill our commitment given to the State of Odisha,” said Mr. V.R. Sharma, Dy. Managing Director and CEO (Steel), JSPL.
The company has deployed sophisticated infrastructure and equipment capable of producing the superior grade steel in the world. Five out of six units of the captive power plant of 810 MW capacity in the project have already been constructed.
