According to the official statement, the Iranian envoy was called in for a meeting with the Foreign Secretary, who expressed India’s “deep concern” over the incident earlier in the day. The episode reportedly involved two Indian-flagged merchant ships navigating through the vital shipping corridor.

India underscored the importance it attaches to the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers, especially in a region witnessing heightened geopolitical tensions. The MEA reiterated that secure and uninterrupted maritime movement is critical not only for India’s energy security but also for global trade stability.

During the discussion, the Foreign Secretary recalled Iran’s past cooperation in facilitating safe passage for vessels bound for India, while stressing that such assurances must continue amid the current volatility. He urged the Iranian authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further incidents and ensure the smooth transit of India-bound ships through the Strait.

The Indian side also called for the early resumption of normal shipping operations, highlighting the global significance of the Hormuz passage, through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil and gas supplies flows.

The Iranian Ambassador, in response, assured that India’s concerns would be conveyed to authorities in Tehran.
The development comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia, with renewed restrictions and reported attacks on vessels in the Strait disrupting maritime traffic and raising concerns over energy supply chains.

India has consistently advocated for de-escalation, dialogue, and the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters, maintaining diplomatic engagement with all stakeholders to safeguard its strategic and economic interests.
