The LPG shortage in India results from geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. This serves as a vital passageway for 20 percent of global energy shipments. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas established new booking rules to protect household energy security, which specifically address the “artificial demand” that arises from people stockpiling during times of crisis.
The New “Lock-In” Mechanism
Effective March 2026, the government has extended the mandatory waiting period between consecutive cylinder bookings.
- Urban Areas: The inter-booking gap has increased from 21 to 25 days.
- Rural Areas: The gap has been extended to 45 days.
Curbing the Black Market and Hoarding
The primary driver of the current LPG shortage isn’t just supply, it’s diversion. The Historically, People often divert subsidized domestic cylinders to the commercial sector (restaurants and dhabas) at a premium.
By enforcing a 25-day lock-in, the digital system automatically rejects the”unusually early” bookings.
This prevents individuals from stockpiling multiple cylinders and makes it nearly impossible. For hoarders to siphon off domestic stock for illegal resale at inflated black-market prices. Which have reportedly reached up to AED 3,500 in some regions.
Ending Panic Buying
Uncertainty often leads to the “panic booking,” where households attempt to secure a reserve cylinder despite having a full one at home. This surge in artificial demand places immense pressure on the distribution chain. The new criteria force a disciplined consumption pattern, ensuring that cylinders are distributed based on genuine need rather than fear.
By integrating these rules with the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC), which now covers 90% of deliveries, the government has created a “full-proof” system.
These measures ensure that the 28% increase in domestic LPG production actually reaches the kitchens of India’s 33 crore families, effectively stabilizing the market during this global crisis.
