Fatwa forces ‘All-Girl Rock Band’ in Kashmir to Quit

Date:

TNI Bureau: ‘Pragaash’ (Light), the all-girl rock band from Jammu & Kashmir had to stop all their activities and quit, after the Grand Mufti issued a fatwa, terming their singing as un-Islamic.

The girls faced threats from conservative Muslim world – both in real life and online. The Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad yesterday issued the fatwa yesterday in a bid silence their voices.

Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Obadullah turned out to be the “biggest loser”, as he failed to protect the girls. He earlier supported the girls on Twitter page, but later withdrew his post.

The girls had impressed everyone at the annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition in December 2012. They won the best performance award in their first public appearance, which probably did not go well with others.

The band included vocalist-guitarist Noma Nazir, drummer Farah Deeba and guitarist Aneeka Khalid (all from 10th standard).
