TNI Bureau: The long-awaited 2-lane National Highway connectivity over Chilika Lake between Gopalpur and Satapada [NH-516(A)] has taken a decisive step forward, with the land acquisition process now formally set in motion.
As per an official letter (No. 47 dated 13.02.2026) issued by the Office of the Collector & District Magistrate, Puri, the proposal for declaration of the Competent Authority of Land Acquisition (CALA) under Section 3(a) of the NH Act, 1956 has been processed. The letter, addressed to the Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), confirms that the Sub-Collector, Puri, has been nominated as CALA for the project. The notification is to be published at the earliest to initiate the land acquisition proceedings.
The project involves eight villages falling within the alignment of the proposed highway — Satapada, Alupatna and Gopinathpurpatana under Brahmagiri Tahasil, and Brahmapur, Bhabanipur, Maensa, Parala and Janhikuda under Krushnaprasad Tahasil. This administrative clearance marks a crucial milestone, as land acquisition is a key prerequisite for execution.
The proposed highway aims to ensure seamless connectivity across the Chilika region, significantly reducing travel time between Gopalpur and Satapada. It is expected to boost tourism, improve access to the lake and nearby attractions, and create fresh economic opportunities for local communities dependent on fishing, hospitality and allied sectors.
Importantly, this development comes in response to a long-standing public demand. The consistent efforts and sustained follow-up by the Brahmagiri MLA Upasna Mohapatra, played a pivotal role in expediting the process and securing momentum for the project. Her proactive engagement with authorities reflects a strong commitment to fulfilling people’s aspirations and accelerating regional development.
With the formal nomination of the land acquisition authority and notification process underway, the Chilika connectivity project has now moved from promise to tangible progress — bringing renewed hope for infrastructure-driven growth in the region.
