TNI Bureau: In a significant move aimed at tightening border security, the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal has announced that all pending land required for border fencing along the India-Bangladesh border will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) within the next 45 days.
The decision was taken during the first Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna on Monday. Addressing the media after the meeting, Adhikari said the process of transferring land for the fencing project would begin immediately to ensure faster completion of the border barrier.
The Chief Minister stated that the move was part of the BJP’s electoral commitment and would help curb illegal infiltration, cross-border smuggling, and other security concerns in border districts.
West Bengal shares a long international border with Bangladesh, and several stretches remain unfenced due to pending land acquisition and transfer issues. The BJP has repeatedly accused the previous Trinamool Congress government of delaying the process and failing to cooperate fully with central agencies on border security matters.
The issue of infiltration had emerged as a major political issue during the recently concluded Assembly elections, with BJP leaders promising strict action and stronger coordination with the BSF if voted to power.
The Calcutta High Court had also earlier expressed concern over delays in handing over land already acquired for fencing work and sought faster action from the state administration.
Officials believe the latest decision could accelerate border infrastructure development and improve surveillance in sensitive regions along the India-Bangladesh border.
