TNI Bureau: The Assam BJP recently found itself at the centre of a political controversy after a provocative video surfaced on its official social media handle, triggering sharp reactions and forcing the party into immediate damage control. The incident once again highlighted how a single digital misstep can snowball into a major political embarrassment.

The controversial clip depicted a dramatic visual involving Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma holding a rifle and aiming at two men wearing skullcaps, with one figure resembling a prominent opposition leader. The post, accompanied by an aggressive caption, was widely criticised for being inflammatory and insensitive. Within hours, outrage spread across political circles and civil society, with many questioning the tone and intent of the content.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the Assam BJP quickly removed the post and termed it “unauthorised” and “irresponsible.” The party also took disciplinary action by removing a functionary associated with its social media operations. Senior leaders clarified that the party does not support any message that appears to promote hostility or violence and emphasised that the content was shared without proper approval.

Chief Minister Sarma distanced himself from the episode, stating he had no knowledge of the video and reiterating that the party does not target any particular community. The controversy has also drawn legal attention, underlining how digital communication today carries real-world consequences.

Beyond immediate political damage, the episode reflects a deeper challenge for modern political organisations.
