Smruti Ranjan – ATM Fraudster of Odisha

There is no let up in ATM fraud cases in Odisha. More and more innocent people are becoming the victims of ATM fraud. In the wake of this unprecedented menace, the Odisha Police achieved a major breakthrough by arresting Smruti Ranjan Mallick, an ATM fraudster from Visakhapatnam.

SBI-ATMSmruti Ranjan (26) reportedly carried out online trading by using ATM card number and password of other people. He is suspected to have committed an online theft of lakhs of rupees. He used many fake names and addresses to shop online.

Mallick hails from Nuagaon village under Niali police station of Cuttack district. He was working with Endolite in Visakhapatnam. It is suspected that many other people also work with him in this fraud. Investigation was carried out against him following a complaint from Maheswar Behera of Ramagiri area under Boipariguda Police Station of Koraput district.

Maheswar’s wife, who was in Bhubaneswar a few weeks ago, had sought Mallick’s help un withdrawing money from an ATM. Smruti reportedly noted down the ATM card number and password and bought a computer printer, mobile phones, clothes and shoes on various online shopping websites, including Flipkart and Myntra by using those details. The total shopping stood at Rs 60,000.

Only last month, the Malkangiri Police had arrested nine people, including a woman constable for cloning many ATM cards to withdraw cash from others’ accounts.
