Coup in Egypt: President Morsi Ousted, Detained

The Army in Egypt ousted country’s first democratically elected President Mohammed Mursi (Morsi) in a military coup and detained him at a military facility. The Islamist-backed Constitution has been suspended. The military has unveiled a roadmap to fulfill the aspirations of people. People in Cairo celebrated with joy, as the news about Morsi’s ouster became official.

Mohammed MursiArrest warrants have been issued against 300 members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Morsi and other members of his government have been placed under house arrest at the Presidential Republican Guards Club.

Egyptian Army commander General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi addressed the nation on TV and said President Morsi is replaced by the chief justice of constitutional court. The military takeover took place after the expiry of 48 hours deadline set by the Army. Morsi had earlier refused to step down.

Early Presidential Elections will take place in Egypt. Liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei is being backed by the Army. But, there will be no transfer of power and the President will be elected in an election only.
