The Monsoon brought a little relief from the scorching heat, but power crisis will still continue in 2014. According to the statistics prepared by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for the current fiscal 2013-14, power shortage will increase in 17 states including Odisha. While the southern states will face serious power crisis, Odisha will witness less power deficit in 2014.

The CEA report said that the southern region include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and the union territory Pondicherry will be the worst hit due to power crisis. These states are likely to witness a power shortage of over 19 per cent in 2013-14. The power deficit was 15.5% in 2012-13. While Tamil Nadu will witness a power deficit of 26.5 per cent in 2013-14, the power shortage will be 24.8 per cent in Kerala. The shortfall will be around 23.2 per cent in Karnataka, 9.1 per cent in Andhra Pradesh and 9.9 per cent in Pondicherry.

The power deficit in Punjab is likely to be around 19.7 per cent. Among other states, Bihar (19 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (18 per cent), Uttarakhand (15 per cent), Tripura (14 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (17.7 per cent), Rajasthan (15 per cent) are expected to witness power shortage. However, Odisha is likely to witness lesser power crisis. The deficit is likely to be around 0.8 per cent in 2014.

Similarly, Maharashtra, Goa, Jharkhand and Nagaland will witness the shortage in power supply of 9.8 per cent, 4.5 per cent, 6.8 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively.

The North-East region is expected to face a power deficit of 11.3 per cent, followed by the Northern (5.8 per cent) and Western (1.2 per cent) regions. However, the Eastern region is projected to see a power surplus of 10.2 per cent.
