NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Rayagada Mob Assault

TNI Bureau: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has officially intervened in the shocking mob violence reported from Rayagada, Odisha, taking suo motu cognizance of the brutal assault, molestation, and public stripping of a 22-year-old woman intern.

According to the official notice issued by the Commission, the heinous incident occurred on June 16, 2026, after the victim was targeted by a mob acting on completely false rumors labeling her and her colleague as “child kidnappers.”

Demands Action Taken Report (ATR) Within 7 Days
Strongly condemning the targeted violence, the apex women’s rights body has issued a strict directive to the Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, demanding a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.

The Commission has explicitly sought detailed information from the state police administration on the following fronts:

Legal Action & FIR: Details of the First Information Report (FIR) and the specific criminal provisions invoked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Investigation Status: The current progress of the ongoing probe and the exact number of arrests made so far.

Accountability for Misinformation: Concrete steps and actions taken against individuals responsible for fabricating and spreading the child-lifter rumors that instigated the mob.

Survivor Care: The immediate medical attention, professional counseling, and long-term rehabilitation measures being provided to the traumatized survivor.

Institutional Safety & Prevention: Institutional safeguards adopted to protect NGO workers and interns operating in remote areas, alongside preventative steps like community policing and public awareness campaigns designed to completely curb mob vigilantism.

The NCW has reiterated its commitment to the safety of women and reminded citizens that support is available around the clock via the NCW Helpline at 14490.
