TNI Bureau: The controversy surrounding Tikhiri Sarpanch Chameli Ojha took a new turn on Thursday after the Kendrapara police claimed that three police personnel were injured during an altercation at the Mahakalpara Block Office and rejected allegations that Ojha had been assaulted in custody.
According to the Superintendent of Police, Kendrapara, the incident occurred during an official meeting at the Mahakalpara Block Office, where Ojha allegedly got into a heated argument with the Block Development Officer and other officials, leading to disruption of official work.
Police personnel were subsequently called to restore order. The SP said that despite repeated requests, the Sarpanch and her associates allegedly obstructed officials and resisted police action. During the ensuing confrontation, a woman Sub-Inspector, a lady Home Guard, and an Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF) personnel reportedly sustained injuries and were later treated at the Community Health Centre in Mahakalpara.
Based on complaints lodged by the BDO and police personnel, two separate cases were registered at Mahakalpara Police Station. The charges include obstruction of public servants, assault on police personnel, criminal intimidation, and unauthorized videography inside the BDO’s chamber.
Following her arrest, Chameli Ojha was produced before a court. However, she later complained of chest pain and was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
While undergoing treatment, Ojha alleged that she had been assaulted by the police. The Kendrapara police, however, said preliminary verification, witness statements and medical reports did not support the allegation. Instead, they maintained that the injuries were suffered by police personnel while performing their duties.
The case has triggered a political controversy, with competing claims emerging from both sides. Further investigation is underway.
