TNI Bureau: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) Parliamentary Party has formally written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him not to recognise any separate group or faction claiming to represent the party in the House. In a letter dated June 10, 2026, AITC National General Secretary and Parliamentary Party leader Abhishek Banerjee asserted that the Trinamool Congress is a single and indivisible political party.
Citing the Supreme Court’s 2023 judgment in the Subhash Desai case, the letter argued that the political party, and not the legislature party, is supreme in appointing the leader and whip. It maintained that members cannot carve out a parallel faction and seek independent recognition.
The party also contended that the anti-defection law does not permit a split and warned that any such move could attract disqualification under the Tenth Schedule.
Meanwhile, a large number of TMC met Union Minister Bhupender Yadav at his residence ahead of their scheduled meeting with the Speaker tomorrow. They claim the support of 22 out of 29 Trinamool MPs in Lok Sabha.
