TNI Bureau: The Supreme Court of India has raised serious concerns over certain content in a Class 8 school textbook prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), particularly references related to corruption in the judiciary. The Court observed that such sensitive subjects must be handled carefully, especially in textbooks meant for young students.
The Bench noted that school-level material should present balanced and responsible information so that students develop a proper understanding of democratic institutions. It stressed that any discussion about institutions like the judiciary must be supported by appropriate context and clarity.
The Court expressed concern that incomplete or one-sided references could negatively influence students’ perception of the justice system. It emphasized the need to maintain public confidence in constitutional institutions.
Following the observations, NCERT is expected to review the concerned portions of the textbook.
The issue has sparked debate on how educational content should address institutional accountability while maintaining accuracy and balance.
