TNI Bureau: BJD’s Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sasmit Patra, has written to Union Minister Jual Oram, seeking urgent intervention over alleged indiscriminate police action against tribal communities in Sijimali, Odisha.
In his letter dated April 11, Patra expressed deep concern over recent clashes between police and local tribal residents protesting a proposed bauxite mining project in the region. He noted that the confrontation has led to injuries on both sides, including among tribal men and women, and termed the situation “deeply concerning.”
Raising key legal and constitutional issues, Patra emphasized the need to protect tribal communities from excessive force and ensure that their rights are upheld. He highlighted the importance of obtaining “free, prior, and informed consent” of Gram Sabhas before undertaking mining activities, as mandated under the Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas Act (PESA). He also called for strict adherence to safeguards provided under the Forest Rights Act.
The BJD MP urged the Union Minister to ensure immediate restraint on the ground and safeguard the dignity, security, and rights of tribal communities. He further requested that the Centre engage with the Odisha government to address the situation and prevent further escalation.
Patra stressed that a dialogue-based approach, in line with legal provisions, is essential to resolving the issue amicably. He added that timely intervention by the Centre would help de-escalate tensions and restore confidence among the affected tribal population in Sijimali.
