TNI Bureau: BJD MP Dr. Sasmit Patra has expressed serious concern over the prolonged non-functioning of the Press Council of India, a statutory and autonomous body established in 1978 to safeguard press freedom and uphold ethical journalism.
He pointed out that the 14th Press Council completed its term on October 5, 2024, but the 15th Council has not been constituted even after more than 16 months. The situation worsened after the extended tenure of former Chairperson Justice Ranjana Desai ended on December 17, 2025, without the appointment of a successor.
Dr. Patra urged the Government to act urgently to appoint a new Chairperson and constitute the 15th Press Council, stating that restoring its full functioning is essential to uphold democratic values, strengthen media accountability, and reaffirm commitment to a free, fair, and responsible press.
