Sambalpur Lynching: 6 Arrested for killing West Bengal Labourer

TNI Bureau: A 19-year-old labourer, Jewel Sheikh from Murshidabad area of West Bengal, was lynched by a group of youths in Sambalpur in Odisha. He was assaulted on suspicion of being an “illegal Bangladeshi immigrant”. At least 6 people have been arrested in connection with this case.

According to reports, the incident occurred after the group of attackers asked for ‘Bidi’, but were refused. Later, Jewel and his co-workers were asked to show his Aadhaar Cards, and attacked with rods and sticks. Jewel succumbed to a head injury while some others were injured. Two other workers, Akir Sheikh and Palash Sheikh are being treated at Sambalpur Hospital.

The Muslim Migrant Labourers have been staying in Sambalpur for years. But, this is the first time such an incident occurred, which is alarming and highly dangerous.
