The Congress also formally announced Rahul Gandhi as the No. 2 in the Congress and hinted that he would be the Prime Ministerial candidate of the party in 2014 general elections. The 42-year-old Rahul was the General Secretary of the Congress Party.

Going forward, all General Secretaries of the party would report to Rahul Gandhi and he would play a bigger role in preparing the Congress for 2014 polls with his youth brigade.

While the Congress leaders and cadres celebrated Rahul’s elevation, the BJP sought to downplay it, saying everybody knew that Rahul Gandhi was No.2 in the Congress even if it was made official today. The party also said that it would not help the Congress, which is facing serious corruption and misgovernance issues.
