TNI Bureau: The nomination of Rajya Sabha candidates has always remained the exclusive prerogative of Naveen Patnaik, President of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Historically, there has been no precedent of consulting senior leaders before finalising candidates. Naveen is known for taking independent calls, often springing surprises that reinforce his authority within the party.
Against this backdrop, Pravat Biswal’s public challenge to the leadership’s decision marks a significant breach of party discipline. As a former MLA, he holds no formal role in the party’s decision-making hierarchy. His son, a sitting MLA, is constitutionally and politically bound by the party line. If Souvic Biswal fails and challenges the decision, he may face party leadership’s ire.
Yet, reports suggest that Biswal not only questioned the decision openly but also created an avoidable scene, allegedly arguing with senior leaders and misbehaving with some. He also brought massive corruption allegations without any substance. Such open defiance of the leadership rarely goes unnoticed in a tightly controlled organisation like the BJD. Political observers believe this episode of indiscipline could carry serious consequences for Biswal’s future within the party.
