Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday, calling for national unity and heightened vigilance as the ongoing conflict in West Asia enters its third week. Emphasizing that the global disruptions caused by the crisis are expected to persist for a long time, the Prime Minister urged the country to face the challenge with the same perseverance displayed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
National Security and Law Enforcement on High Alert
The Prime Minister warned that certain elements might attempt to take undue advantage of the volatile situation. In response, he confirmed that all agencies responsible for law and order have been placed on high alert. This strengthening of security protocols spans coastal and border security, cyber defense, and the protection of strategic installations.
“If every government and every citizen of the country moves together, then we can overcome every challenge,” PM Modi stated, stressing that a collective effort is essential to maintaining national stability.
Crackdown on Misinformation and Economic Malpractice
A significant portion of the Prime Minister’s address focused on domestic stability. He specifically requested state governments to monitor and take strict action against those indulging in:
-
Hoarding and Black Marketing: Preventing the exploitation of supply chain disruptions.
-
Fake News: Stopping the spread of lies and misinformation intended to capitalize on the crisis.
Economic and Humanitarian Concerns
Admitting that the situation is “worrisome,” the Prime Minister highlighted the multifaceted challenges India faces. With nearly 50% of India’s natural gas and a large portion of its crude oil sourced from the region, the conflict poses a direct threat to energy security and the national economy.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister underscored the humanitarian stakes, noting that approximately one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, while a high number of Indian crew members serve on commercial ships in the affected seas.
Safety of Indian Citizens Abroad
PM Modi assured the House that the government is in constant contact with regional leaders to ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora. He confirmed he has held two rounds of telephone discussions with various heads of state in West Asia. All of whom have assured the safety of Indian nationals.
For those affected by the violence, including those who have lost their lives or sustained injuries. The government is providing necessary support and ensuring the best possible medical treatment through active diplomatic missions.
