TNI Bureau: In the wake of growing concerns over public safety and recent incidents of mob violence, the Odisha Police has gone into high alert mode, with Director General of Police (DGP) set to chair a crucial statewide law and order review meeting at 4 PM on Saturday.

The high-level meeting is expected to bring together the state’s top police leadership, including all Inspectors General (IGs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), the Commissioner of Police, two Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), and the Railway SP.

Senior officers from across Odisha are likely to participate through physical and virtual modes.

The review assumes significance following the shocking mob lynching of a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable in Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, an incident that triggered serious concern within the state administration and police establishment. The meeting has reportedly been convened on the direction of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who has sought strict measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

According to police sources, the focus of the meeting will be on strengthening field intelligence, improving rapid response systems, and ensuring stricter monitoring of law and order situations at the district level. Senior officers are also expected to review preparedness for handling communal tension, local disputes, and crowd-related violence.

The DGP is likely to issue firm instructions to district police units to act swiftly against unlawful gatherings, rumour-mongering, and any attempts at vigilante justice. Police officials may also be directed to intensify community outreach and improve coordination with local administrations to defuse tensions before they escalate.

The recent Balianta incident has raised larger questions about public anger, crowd mobilisation, and the growing tendency of people taking law into their own hands. Security agencies are now expected to adopt a more proactive policing strategy to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

With Odisha witnessing increased public movement and several major events lined up in the coming weeks, the state police appears keen to send a strong message that maintaining law and order will remain a top priority.
