Odisha Police Showcases New Criminal Laws Through ‘Nyaya Sanhita Exhibition’

Date:

TNI Bureau: The Odisha Police will organise a “Nyaya Sanhita Exhibition” at the Exhibition Ground, Unit-III in Bhubaneswar to create public awareness about India’s newly introduced criminal laws. The exhibition aims to educate citizens about the country’s modernised criminal justice framework that replaced colonial-era laws.

The exhibition will highlight three new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). These laws came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing outdated colonial statutes and introducing a more modern and victim-centric justice system.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on March 6, 2026, by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, will attend the event as the chief guest. Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania shared the details during a press conference at Police Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

The exhibition will remain open to the general public from March 7 to March 10, 2026, providing an opportunity for citizens to understand the functioning and impact of the new criminal laws.

Addressing the media, DGP Khurania said the reforms represent a significant shift from the colonial “punitive” model of justice to a more justice-oriented and victim-centric system. The new laws focus on protecting the rights and dignity of victims, ensuring timely investigation and trial, and reinforcing the principle that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

The exhibition will feature 10 interactive stalls, approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which will guide visitors through the entire judicial process — from “Crime Scene to High Court.” These stalls will demonstrate how cases move through different stages of investigation, prosecution and trial.

Visitors will also learn about technological and scientific advancements in criminal investigation, including e-Sakshya for digital evidence management and the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) used for biometric identification. The exhibition will also showcase the use of mobile forensic units for on-site scientific investigation and the provision of mandatory forensic examination for serious crimes.

Several operational aspects of the justice system will also be displayed through stalls on Emergency Response 112, police station procedures, hospital coordination, forensic laboratories, public prosecution, district courts, prisons and High Court operations.

The exhibition will further highlight the role of the Special Operations Group in anti-Maoist operations and the contribution of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) during natural disasters. It will also showcase initiatives related to police modernisation, empowerment and the prevention of crimes against women.

Reaffirming the force’s commitment to public awareness, DGP Khurania said the initiative aims to familiarise citizens with the historic transformation in India’s criminal justice system. By using scientific investigation methods, modern technology and encouraging citizen participation, the police aim to ensure swift and fair justice for victims.

The press conference was also attended by Binaytosh Mishra, DGP of Crime Branch, and Arun Bothra, ADGP (Railways and Coastal Security). The “Nyaya Sanhita Exhibition” reflects the proactive efforts of the Odisha Police to strengthen public awareness, transparency and trust in the evolving justice system.
