TNI Bureau: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Odisha government, alleging a complete collapse of law and order in the state.
Addressing a press conference at Shankha Bhavan, senior BJD leaders accused the police administration of functioning under political pressure while criminals operated fearlessly under the “protection” of the ruling party.
Senior party leader Bhrugu Baxipatra alleged that more than ten murders had taken place in Ganjam district within the last month due to police inaction and political interference. Referring to the recent brutal public assault near Giri Road in Berhampur, he claimed that two key accused were associates of a local BJP MLA, which was preventing police from taking action against them. He further alleged that ordinary citizens visiting police stations were first being questioned about their political affiliation before complaints were registered.
BJD youth wing president Chinmay Sahoo alleged that after the BJP’s “double-engine government” came to power, an “unholy nexus” had emerged between BJP leaders and criminal elements, weakening police morale across Odisha. He cited recent incidents including attacks on police personnel in Nayagarh and Dhenkanal’s Bhuban area, as well as alleged misconduct by BJP leaders in front of administrative officials.
Party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty also expressed concern over alleged threats to journalists and press freedom. Referring to the burning of copies of Odia daily “Sakala” in Nayagarh and a case filed against a journalist, he termed the incidents “deeply unfortunate” and demanded accountability from the ruling party.
The BJD urged the Director General of Police to take immediate steps to restore public confidence in the police and control the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
