OCA Poll Row Deepens, Governance Questions Take Centre Stage

Date:

TNI Bureau: The election controversy within the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has intensified, exposing sharp divisions within the state’s cricket administration and triggering serious allegations of irregularities. What began as internal dissatisfaction has now escalated into a public dispute, placing the association’s credibility under scrutiny at a crucial juncture.

The immediate flashpoint is the decision to defer the OCA elections. Senior cricket administrator Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra has openly opposed the move and boycotted a recent General Body meeting. He has alleged that the postponement lacks transparency and questioned why the state body has not moved forward with elections when several affiliated district associations have already completed theirs. According to him, the delay raises doubts about the intent and functioning of the current leadership.

Mohapatra has gone a step further by alleging long-standing administrative and financial irregularities within the association. He has called for an independent audit and indicated that he may seek government intervention to ensure a thorough inquiry. His stance has transformed what could have been a routine organizational disagreement into a larger debate on accountability in sports governance.

On the other hand, OCA Secretary Sanjay Behera has firmly rejected the allegations, terming them baseless and politically motivated. He has maintained that the decision to defer the elections was taken collectively during a Special General Body meeting. The leadership argues that the postponement is linked to regulatory considerations, including alignment with evolving sports legislation and compliance requirements from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to the OCA office-bearers, there has been no deviation from due process.

However, the issue now extends beyond personalities. Cricket in Odisha has grown steadily over the years, with improved infrastructure, better exposure for players, and national attention through matches at venues like the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Any instability at the administrative level risks slowing this progress and affecting grassroots development.

Sports bodies function best when their governance is transparent and beyond reproach. Elections in such associations are not merely internal affairs; they determine who will shape policies, manage finances, and guide the careers of aspiring cricketers. When the electoral process itself becomes contentious, confidence among stakeholders inevitably suffers.

The OCA now stands at a crossroads. It must ensure that the electoral roadmap is clear, legally sound, and publicly transparent. An independent review, if necessary, could help restore trust. What Odisha cricket requires at this moment is not factional confrontation but institutional stability.

Ultimately, the legitimacy of any leadership comes not just from winning an election, but from conducting it in a manner that leaves no room for doubt. The spirit of cricket demands fairness, and that principle must begin in the boardroom.
