Designed to reduce road congestion and improve regional connectivity, the project will introduce a large-scale water transport system across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has floated the first tender for Phase 1 of the project, officially initiating the plan. The Water Metro aims to connect Mumbai with nearby regions such as Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Vasai, and Mira-Bhayandar through an organised network of ferry and water transport services.

In the first phase, 16 routes and 26 terminals will be developed. Out of these, eight are existing ferry routes that will be modernised, while the remaining eight are new routes planned to improve access to important areas.

Some of the major existing routes include Gateway of India to Elephanta, Mandwa, and Belapur to Nerul, while new routes will connect Vasai to Mira-Bhayandar, Vashi to Navi Mumbai International Airport, Gateway of India to Vashi, and Bandra to Worli and Nariman Point.

The project will also feature upgraded terminals, safety systems, and navigation support to ensure smooth and secure travel. Authorities believe Mumbai’s coastline and creek network can serve as an effective alternative to crowded roads and suburban rail services.

Officials expect the Water Metro to cut travel time, reduce pollution, and offer a more sustainable transport option for daily commuters. Once operational, it could become a major solution to Mumbai’s growing traffic and infrastructure challenges.
