TNI Bureau: Indian Railways has approved a ₹270-crore project to install the indigenous Kavach train protection system on 631 route kilometres (RKm) of East Coast Railway, aiming to enhance railway safety and prevent accidents.
The project will cover six key railway sections—Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khordha Road–Balangir, Naupada–Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh and Bobbili–Salur.
Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system that helps prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when required.
The installation of Kavach on these routes is expected to improve the safety of both passenger and freight train operations across Odisha and neighbouring regions. The project is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to expand Kavach coverage on high-density and strategically important routes.
