TNI Bureau: Cricket Legend and Former West Indies captain Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history, passed away at his home in Barbados on Friday. He was 89.
Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974. A left-handed batsman, exceptional fielder and versatile bowler, he scored more than 8,000 Test runs and claimed 235 wickets in international cricket. In his overall first-class career, he amassed over 28,000 runs and took 1,043 wickets.
Paying tribute, Cricket West Indies said, βA great innings has come to an end.β Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow described Sobers as a symbol of Caribbean excellence who inspired generations through his achievements and helped put the region on the global sporting map. His death marks the end of an era in world cricket.
