Congress Slams BJP Over Sijimali Mining Row, Ajay Lallu Flags Tribal, Environmental Concerns

TNI Bureau: The proposed bauxite mining project in Odisha’s Sijimali hills has sparked a fresh political confrontation, with Congress Leader and OPCC Incharge Ajay Kumar Lallu launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led Centre and the state government.

In a strongly worded social media post, Lallu accused the “double engine” government of attempting to “destroy” a pristine region spread across Rayagada and Kalahandi, often referred to as “Odisha’s New Zealand” for its natural beauty.

Lallu also targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah over recent remarks on tribal representation, alleging that the BJP’s outreach to tribal communities is politically driven.

He claimed that the current government’s policies are “anti-tribal” and drew comparisons with colonial-era injustices, invoking tribal icons like Birsa Munda, Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu.

At the centre of the controversy is the proposed bauxite mining project in the Sijimali hills, reportedly linked to Vedanta Limited.

The Congress leader alleged that tribal land has been handed over to corporate interests through coercion and administrative pressure. He further claimed that local communities are being threatened to vacate their land, allegations that have intensified political tensions in the region.

Lallu also raised environmental concerns, stating that the Sijimali hills act like a natural sponge due to their porous bauxite composition, giving rise to over 200 streams.

These streams feed key rivers such as the Nagavali River and the Vamsadhara River, which are crucial for irrigation and livelihoods in Odisha and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

He warned that mining in the region could disrupt these water systems and have long-term consequences for agriculture and ecology.

The remarks come amid ongoing protests by tribal communities in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, where villagers have opposed land acquisition and expressed fears over displacement and loss of livelihood.

While the government has maintained that mining activities follow due process and are essential for economic development, opposition parties continue to question the transparency and impact of such projects.

The Sijimali mining issue is fast emerging as a major political flashpoint, bringing into focus the balance between industrial growth and protection of tribal rights and natural resources. As the war of words escalates, the situation on the ground remains tense, with both political and environmental stakes running high.
