Congress-BJD Convergence: Tactical Compromise or Emerging Alliance in Odisha?

Date:

TNI Bureau: A fresh wave of political realignment is clearly taking shape in Odisha, with the Congress and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) moving from episodic coordination to what increasingly looks like structured political convergence.

The latest trigger is Bhakta Charan Das withdrawing the election petition against Narla MLA Manorama Mohanty after consultations with the Congress high command. But this is not an isolated decision; it fits into a broader pattern that has emerged in recent weeks.

Notably, both parties had earlier joined hands during the Rajya Sabha elections to support a common candidate, signalling a tactical alignment at the national level. This was followed by their coming together again under a united opposition forum to demand the resignation of the state Health Minister over the SCB fire tragedy, an issue that allowed both to share a common political platform despite being traditional rivals.

This evolving coordination suggests a calibrated strategy rather than coincidence. For the Congress, aligning with the dominant regional force may be a survival tactic in a state where its independent electoral strength has sharply declined. For the BJD, selective engagement with Congress helps counter the BJP while retaining its regional dominance.

However, this proximity carries risks. Congress risks further erosion of its identity, appearing as a junior partner rather than an alternative. The BJD, meanwhile, must balance this cooperation without alienating its core narrative of political equidistance.

What is unfolding is not a formal alliance yet, but a pragmatic, issue-based alignment that could significantly reshape Odisha’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
