Date:

TNI Bureau: After the humiliation in cricket at Eden Gardens, the sports lovers waited for some good news in Hockey. However, the injury-hit Indian team disappointed, as they went down 2-3 to Pakistan and lost a chance to win Bronze Medal first time since 1982. Pakistan yet again proved India’s nemesis in Champions Trophy. They had beaten India in bronze medal matches in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

India had taken the lead through Raghunath. Pakistan equalised through Muhammad Rizwan Junior. At half time, both teams tied at 1-1. In the second half, Pakistan played aggressively and took a 3-1 lead. In the last minute of the match, Rupinder converted a penalty corner to reduce the margin, but India lost 2-3.

Belgium won a thrilling encounter against Germany to secure the fifth place. Germany finished sixth. New Zealand beat England to finish seventh. Australia defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time to win the Champions Trophy for the fifth time in a row.
