TNI Bureau: The Union government has sought an explanation from the West Bengal administration over alleged lapses in protocol during the recent visit of Droupadi Murmu to Darjeeling district. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has asked the West Bengal Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report by 5 pm today outlining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken note of irregularities in the prescribed protocol for receiving the President during her visit. The issue has gained significance as the President occupies the highest constitutional office in the country, and established procedures are expected to be followed by state authorities during such engagements.
Apart from the protocol concerns, the Centre has also sought clarification regarding the last-minute change of venue for the International Santal Conference held in Darjeeling district during the President’s visit. The event, which was expected to highlight issues and cultural identity of the Santal community, reportedly witnessed alterations in arrangements that prompted the Centre to seek a formal explanation.
Officials said the report should detail the sequence of events, the reasons behind the changes in venue, and whether due procedures were followed by the state administration while coordinating the President’s visit.
The development has triggered fresh political debate, with attention focusing on the functioning of the state government led by Mamata Banerjee. The Centre’s move to seek a report indicates the seriousness with which the matter is being viewed in New Delhi.
Further action may be considered after the Ministry of Home Affairs reviews the report submitted by the West Bengal government.
