Building collapses in Thane, 58 Dead

At least 58 died and over 60 were injured after a seven-storied under-construction illegal building collapsed in Thane on Thursday. The death toll may rise further as many people have been buried under the debris. The rescue operation is still on.

Most of the victims included children and women. The children have sustained serious injuries in the incident as the tuition classes were being held in the building.

The fire tenders along with over 24 ambulances are stationed at the site of the accident. The rescue operations are being carried out under the supervision of Civic Commissioner RA Rajeev and District Collector P Velarasu.

The injured have been admitted to various hospitals including Thane Civil, CSM Civic hospital at Kalwa, Kalsekar hospital in Kalwa. The victims in critical condition have been shifted to Sion and JJ Hospital.

The building was unauthorised and built on the fest land in the Shil Dhaigar locality and two notices were sent to the building. Many a time, the forest department had been requested to take action against the building. While the construction was still on, it was occupied upto fourth floor. Families were living without any occupancy certificate.
