TNI Bureau: In a shocking case of mob lynching, a youth from Olatpur, Cuttack, employed as a Constable in Cuttack Government Railway Police (GRP), was beaten to death by a group of people, on the allegations of molestation of a young woman, in Balianta area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The angry mob reportedly gathered after the alert issued by two girls on a scooty, who were into a “scuffle” with the bike-borne youths. They beat up and tortured the youth Soumya Ranjan Swain, leading to severe injuries and subsequent death.
Although the police arrived late, they could do little to save the youth from the clutches of angry mob. The youth was rushed to the Capital Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered at Balianta Police Station, which comes under Commissionerate Police of Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar DCP has clarified that a probe has been ordered with special teams being formed. The accused are being identified. Associate of the youth was already questioned. Statements of both girls will be recorded too. The girl has lodged a “attempt to rape” complaint. Family of the deceased has also lodged a murder case.
Several other theories have emerged in relation to this case. However, only police can probe and ascertain the truth.
The incident raised serious questions on the law-and-order situation in the Police Commissionerate area. Frequent cases of lawlessness in Bhubaneswar area and elsewhere in the state, has stunned the public.
