Despite the popularity of the Nook devices B&N operated the cut at this peak of the back to school season most probably to compete with its rival Amazon.com that is most likely to launch a new version of its Kindle Fire tablet soon. Amazon is the present market leader with about 60 percent of e-book and e-reader sales.

Besides Amazon’s Kindle Fire, the step also positions Barnes & Noble’s tablets in a better place to compete with Google’s Nexus 7, which sells for $199 for the 8GB model and $249 for the 16GB version.

Earlier also, Barnes and Noble had reported lower-than-expected revenue in the sale of Nooks, which fell to 10.5 per cent.
