TNI Bureau: Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi has expressed deep concern over the state cabinet’s decision to halt the proposed metro rail project for Bhubaneswar and its surrounding regions. In a letter addressed to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, she has urged the government to reconsider the move, citing the growing need for modern urban transport infrastructure.
According to the MP, the metro project was crucial in addressing rising population pressure and traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar. Beyond the capital city, the project had the potential to significantly improve connectivity with nearby urban centers like Cuttack, Jatani, and Khurda. Its abrupt cancellation, she noted, has led to dissatisfaction among the public.
Sarangi also highlighted that nearly ₹274 crore has already been spent from the state exchequer on the project. She warned that if the project is shelved now and revived later, the cost of construction could increase two to four times, placing an additional burden on public finances.
Emphasizing its broader benefits, she pointed out that the metro would have enhanced accessibility to major tourist destinations such as Lingaraj Temple, Dhauli, and Nandankanan Zoological Park.
She further stressed that the project aligns with the goals of sustainable and environment-friendly urban transport.
Calling for a larger public interest perspective, Sarangi urged the state government to revive the metro project, asserting that it would play a vital role in realizing the vision of a developed Odisha.
