Empowering Tribal Women: A Stride towards Equality and Justice in Odisha

Date:

TNI Bureau: In the heart of Odisha, the strength and crucial roles played by women in tribal regions have long been eclipsed by challenges, especially exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited access to digital information and services, coupled with low internet accessibility in tribal pockets, heightened vulnerabilities, particularly among women. The absence of financial management knowledge exposed them to risks such as money laundering and chit fund scams, resulting in severe economic distress.

In response to this pressing need, the Kalinga Kusum Foundation, supported by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, embarked on a transformative journey in the Kalahandi district’s Sagada Gram Panchayat.

Through 10 impactful training camps led by trained and experienced resource persons, the initiative aimed to boost digital, financial, and legal literacy among tribal women—a crucial stride towards tribal empowerment and a more just society.

The program sought to empower 1000 Women Self Help Group (WSHG) members with essential skills, spanning understanding legal provisions, accessing state machinery, utilizing smart phones, and navigating financial services.

This initiative not only aligns with the broader goal of achieving tribal empowerment but also emphasizes the pivotal role of digital, financial, and legal literacy in crafting informed and resilient communities.

Importantly, this program was implemented in Sagada Gram Panchayat, adopted by Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) for its holistic and sustainable development.

This holistic approach signifies a beacon of positive change, signaling a transformative path towards empowerment and sustainable progress.
