Jayadev Vihar Flyover in Bhubaneswar: A Death Trap

Date:

TNI Bureau: In the last six months, two concrete slabs from the busy Jayadev Vihar Flyover in Bhubaneswar, crashed down to the ground, causing panic among the people. The first incident occurred on March 16, 2012. Some schoolchildren had a miraculous escape, as two slabs fell to the ground. The latest incident occurred yesterday.

At around 9 AM on Sunday, a concrete slab fell to the ground, creating a big hole on the flyover. Fortunately, nobody was on the road, when the slab crashed down. No injuries were reported. The NHAI officials later removed 25 other slabs and began the maintenance and repair. The normal traffic was stopped on that route for an hour or so.

The Jayadev Vihar flyover was constructed in 2004. It’s shocking that despite a recent incident, the authorities have not taken any lesson from it. The bridge was constructed by Gammon India, while Sri Jagannath Express Highway agency has undertaken the maintenance activities.

There is a massive outrage among the people following this incident. It’s really shocking that the authorities have shown utter apathy towards the matter and put the lives of people at risk.
