TNI Bureau: In a rare incident, a jute bag containing some newspapers, magazines, calendars and mails was received at Delhi after 46 years. The ‘Missing diplomatic bag’ was spotted as a shinning stuff on the Bossons glacier in the French Alps and rescued by mountaineers.
Contents of this bag have also been revealed. The diplomatic bag contains copies of Hindustan Times, The Statesman and The Hindu newspapers, 1966 calendars and a letter addressed to the then Indian consul general in New York CJK Menon. The 9 kg weight bag has been stamped as “Diplomatic mail” and “Ministry of External Affairs”, as the foreign ministry is called in India.

The bag was spotted at a place where the Air India flight flying from Mumbai to New York had crashed in 24 January 1966 killing all 117 on board, including top Indian nuclear scientist Homi J. Bhabha, who was known as the “father” of India’s nuclear programme.
The bag was recovered by mountain rescue worker Arnaud Christmann and his neighbor Jules Berger on August 21 on Mont Blanc and was handed over to police in the town of Chamonix at the base of the mountain. Later, it was sent to India by France this month.
