The mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of former Union minister Shashi Tharoor, took a new turn on October 9 when a team of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) doctors submitted a fresh report to the Delhi police, maintaining that she died of poisoning.
The new report by the three-member panel of doctors, who had conducted the autopsy on her, was prepared on the basis of the findings of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) which had examined Sunanda’s viscera.

The report states that the trace of the drug alprax, which was found in her body, was not enough of a lethal dose to kill her. More importantly, the team had again concluded like it did in its first report that her kidney, liver and heart were functioning normally and that her death was caused by poisoning. The viscera report of CFSL in March had hinted at drug poisoning, but police considered it as inconclusive. It then asked AIIMS to re-examine the report and give its findings.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have been asked to revisit and reinvestigate the Sunanda Pushkar case following two fresh forensic reports that point to the presence of poison in her viscera. Sunanda, 52, was found dead in a five-star hotel in South Delhi on the night of January 17, a day after a very public Twitter spat with a Pakistani journalist over the latter’s alleged affair with her husband, Shashi Tharoor.
In July, Tharoor had sought a speedy inquiry for a clear and definitive conclusion to the death of his wife in the wake of reported claims by a senior forensic doctor at AIIMS that he was pressured to manipulate the autopsy report.
